Top Seed Ana Ivanovic Retires From Qatar Total Open

Top seed Ana Ivanovic has pulled out of this week’s Qatar Total Open after injuring her ankle during her second round match against Olga Govortsova on Wednesday.

Ivanovic announced early Thursday that she would not be able to continue at the Tier I tournament because of an ankle ligament strain.

“I had icing all evening and all night, waking up each hour,” said Ivanovic on her official website. “When I got up this morning I couldn’t even walk properly, so that pretty much decided it.”

Fortunately, an MRI revealed that the world No. 3 did not tear any ligaments in her left foot.

“I went to the hospital for an MRI scan,” added Ivanovic. “Luckily there isn’t a tear, just some micro-tears. Now I just have to rest and hope that the injury recovers in time for the tournament in Dubai next week.”

The Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships begins on Monday in the United Arab Emirates.
